By virtue of tripling-up Orlando AFC in the 2016-’17 Major League Footy Florida Winter League opener, the St. Pete Swans still find themselves in the second spot on the winter circuit ladder. But, the increasing heat on the Bloods from both above and below is beginning to show.
With the Suncoast Suns in position to move to 3-0 – and a commanding hold of the top of the ladder – this weekend against the Kangas, there’s no doubting the Swans would benefit from a bit of Shinboner assistance.
A Clearwater win would keep Suncoast amongst the pack, while a Suns victory would likely force the Red & White into a ‘must-win’ situation against the Pasco Black Dog on February 4. Potentially worse – and depending on the results over the coming few rounds – the ladder could shake out with the Swans needing to sweep their remaining regular season matches for a chance to contest the league’s Championship Final (February 25).
Despite fading in the second half last week against a resurgent StarfishFC (1-1-0), Dionne Jones’ Kangas squad is certainly capable of putting up a fight. The Suns, meanwhile, would be arguably justified in pointing to the results for all the confidence they need. Suncoast ran out big ( 16.7.103 – 8.10.58) winners to a StarfishFC squad that subsequently turned the tables and romping over Clearwater.
