ST. PETE FLIES BY LAKELAND IN AFLX RULES TEST, 106-61

Benjamin Walker’s heady play in midfield helped St. Pete run out 45-point winners Saturday vs. Lakeland in an #AFLX rules test match.

The St. Petersburg Swans used a dominating second half performance to pull away from a tight affair to run out 16.10.106 – 9.7.61 winners in an AFLX rules test match vs. the Lakeland Tigers, Saturday in St. Pete.

After jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first minute of play, the Swans looked ready to get a rout underway before Lakeland captain Pat Bilder answered with two majors of his own to put the Tigers up by five.

While the Swans would scratch their way to a 2.1.13 – 2.0.12 lead at the first break, the second stanza was see more of the same, as players adjusted to the wide-open spaces of AFLX rules footy.

After a nip and tuck affair through the period, St. Pete once again struck late in the frame to take make their early 7-point lead stand at the big break.

The second half would spin a completely different take from the first, however, as a quick Tigers strike by Ken Scheidt that drew Lakeland back within one point was quickly negated by a barrage of St. Pete scoring set up by Dustin Jones and CJ Morton.

While Lakeland did close the gap at the third quarter break to with three majors, momentum had turned to the Red & White as the Florida sun also began to take its toll.

With temperatures in the low 80s heading into the final ten minutes, Ben Walker and Jake Keglor locked down midfield, continually keeping Lakeland on defense in the final quarter.

That pressure finally saw the Tigers break down, as St. Pete put up a 29-point margin the 4th en route to a 45-point win.

Schiedt, Bilder and Kyle Roun led the Tigers in scoring, while Basil Benjamin excelled on defense.

Saturday’s AFLX Rules Trial was played on a American (gridiron) football-sized field with regulation goal and behind posts.

With the only center bounces to start each ten-minute quarter, all goals and behinds resulted in a kick-in from fullback.

The St. Petersburg Swans return to action Saturday, November 11 in a Footy 9s rules scrimmage on the Common at Crescent Lake.
