The final result didn’t spoil the festive atmosphere at St. Pete’s ‘Four ‘N Twenty FIeld at Campbell Park’ Saturday night.

A breakout second-half performance by Best On Ground Adham Makki and the rest of the young Pittsburgh Blackbirds metro side saw the Black and Gold off winners, 18.11.119 – 11.7.73 Saturday night in St. Petersburg.

What had been a razor-tight first half, marked by a frenetic pace of play and a demonstration of the Swans’ veteran skill saw St. Petersburg enter the big break up by six, hopefully setting the stage for a happy home opener to the 2017 season.

Those hopes were seemingly dashed as soon as the sun set on an unusually brisk spring evening, as St. Petersburg would only tally a paltry eight points in the second half – their lowest second-half output in the club’s 26-match history.

While Pittsburgh saw overall outstanding performances from Makki, Kyle Roun, Austen Kugler and Aaron Crittenden, the Blackbirds also came out of the halftime break in subdued fashion, managing only 10 points in the third stanza themselves – good enough to head into the final frame clinging to a hard-fought two-point margin.

What was to come in the final quarter wasn’t on anyone’s radar, but and injury to St. Pete key man Tim Kleman and the end of a 3rd quarter cameo by Miro Gladovic opened the floodgates for Makki to firmly take control of play, as Pittsburgh piled on a dramatic 8.2.50 – 1.0 barrage on their way to the 46-point final look.

The 2017 St. Petersburg Swans Home Opener saw the club christen their home ground as ‘Four ‘N Twenty Field at Campbell Park‘, as the US Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg Color Guard presented the colors of both nations as part of the St. Pete club’s America and Australia Armed Forces Appreciation Night.

The Swans also debuted their new Four ‘N Twenty concession stand and new Team Store.

St. Petersburg returns to action Saturday, April 22 at 6 PM vs. the Miami Saints metro side of Ft. Lauderdale AFC. The match will be aired live on stpeteswans.com
