Match Details

The St. Petersburg Swans improved to 5-1 on the season after sweeping a matinee double-header over the Tigers in blazing late Spring conditions in St. Pete Saturday.

Doing so required not one, but two, dramatic comebacks.

Played as two games on an ‘AFLX’ game clock (two 10-minute halves), the first match saw the Swans eke out a 4-point lead at the break, after falling behind by 13 in the early going.

St. Petersburg eventually won out over a wilting Tigers side, pulling away to a 10.3.63 – 6.7.43 result.

The second contest saw the Tigers power to a 30-0 lead before St. Pete answered with a goal and supergoal inside the final minute, to close the stanza trailing by 14.

In the second frame was all Swans, however, as the heat took its toll on Lakeland.

St. Petersburg notched a shutout for the final half, running out – 4.4.30 winners.

That result was the first shutout half for the St. Petersburg defense since 2016.

While Kyle Roun, Austen Kugler, Jason Blackbourn and Robbie Scallaro stood tall for the Tigers, the Swans were able to power to comebacks on the legs of Major League Footy scoring leader Ben McIntosh, with big contributions from Nick Whiteside and Jake Keglor.

‘Feels like’ temperatures for the 11 AM first match were just under 100 with intense humidity.

The result pushes the Swans to a 5-1 season mark as they head into a 3-week break in the competition.

The MLF schedule will see the Tampa Bay Bombers (1-0) face the Clearwater Kangas (0-2) in a double-header in Week Nine.

Tampa Bay (1-0) can pull into the second spot on the 2018 Major League Footy Premiership ladder with a sweep, while Clearwater looks to dig out of the competition cellar.

Ball up is 4 PM, June 9 at Crescent Lake Common in St. Petersburg.
