WINTER WONDERS: SWANS CHART NEW COURSE FOR FLORIDA FOOTY
As the St. Petersburg Swans begin pre-season training this evening – with an eye on the 2017-18 Winter Season Opener (November 18 vs. Orlando), the club is also embarking on a new course for footy in Florida.
With a new primary schedule that sees the club compete in the Major League Footy circuit in an October – March season, the Swans become the flagship club in a new effort to grow Australian football adapted for American gridiron fields.
With the 2015 and 2016 winter training schedule – and the 10-round 2016-17 Inaugural Winter Footy competition – proving to be the club’s strongest in terms of both numbers and growth potential, the Swans’ switch to a full-on winter circuit shouldn’t surprise.
And, in adapting a game play format developed specifically for the United States, the club now turns its attention to staging competitive footy during what has long been the sport’s traditional ‘off-season’.
The schedule change also means footy in Florida will also now be played in more reasonable weather conditions – rather than the scorching heat and humidity of the sub-tropical summer.
The St. Pete Swans open the 2017-18 Major League Footy season November 18th, when the club hosts Orlando AFC in St. Petersburg.
